The Department of Gastroenterology at JNH offers a comprehensive, sophisticated diagnosis and medical treatment for adults and children by a skilled and experienced staff. It is equipped with state-of-the-art Olympus video endoscopes and colonoscopies that help to diagnose virtually all mucosal diseases of the gastrointestinal tract accurately and rapidly. We have been able to bring therapeutic relief to patients by utilizing techniques such as foreign body extraction (coin, denture, bone, meat bolus), dilatation of strictures (both benign and malignant), endoscopic hemostasis (stopping bleeding from ulcers, vascular malformation, varices), stenting for malignant tumors (particularly oesophageal), removal of polyps from stomach and colon, and feeding tube placement. Patients are usually admitted from the emergency department where they are first given care and stabilized before entering the critical care unit or intensive care unit (ICU). At times certain patients are even admitted directly into the ICU. Once admitted, the continuum of critical care begins at the moment of illness or injury and continues throughout the patient's hospitalization, treatment and subsequent recovery.
